De Amerikaanse overheid heeft een substantiële verhoging van de kosten voor het Electronic System for Travel Authorization (ESTA) aangekondigd, van toepassing op reizen naar de Verenigde Staten.
Vanaf 30 september zal de prijs voor een ESTA verdubbelen van 21 dollar naar 40 dollar (circa 34 euro) per persoon voor vrijwel alle Nederlandse toeristen en zakelijke reizigers.
Reizigers die voornemens zijn naar de Verenigde Staten te reizen, worden geadviseerd hun ESTA vóór 29 september aan te vragen. Door dit tijdig te doen, kan nog geprofiteerd worden van het huidige tarief van 21 dollar. Een toegekende ESTA-vergunning is doorgaans twee jaar geldig, tenzij het paspoort van de aanvrager eerder verloopt.
